seriously... does anyone know a place where I can order potatoes for planting online? I've read that it is bad to use the potatoes from the grocery store because of all the chemicals. I would think, then, that I could just use organic potatoes?
I'm really excited about planting them after reading that you can plant them above ground! You just put a few stakes in the ground, wrap some landscaping material around the stakes, fill it with soil and your potatoes... and you've got a potato garden! When they're ready, you just cut the material and the soil and all of your potatoes fall to the ground. No digging required!

I have always just let 1 organic potato grow eyes with sprouts, then cut out (with a bit of potato still attached) of the whole potato. I let them sit on a wet paper towel in the window for a day or 2, then throw them into a big bucket-type planter that I use for taters ;-) when fall is here, I just dump the containter into my garden area (with rows) & pick out the spuds. Then I till the soil from the planter & the soil from my garden, refill planter & start again (same with garden).
I've also grown scallions (green onion / onion tops) in the same planter on top & it's never been a problem

Oh thanks! All the garden places around here don't carry any potatoes for planting and the two seed companies I order online with were out of stock a month ago.
I think I'll get some purple potatoes from there. We got some from our CSA farm last year and loved them!
